In July 2024, The Vaccine Group (TVG) proudly sponsored the graduation awards for the highest achievers in all three years of the BSc Biomedical Science (Hons) Degree at the University of Plymouth. The recipient of the Year Three Award was Ella Cooper (pictured above receiving her award from our Lab Manager, Angela Ward and Dr Tracey Madgett from the University of Plymouth).
Ella was selected for the award as she achieved the highest first-class degree overall within her Biomedical cohort. A major component that contributed to her overall grade was her dissertation project. During her university years, she developed a strong interest in microbiology, inspired by the work of PhD student Jazz Conway, who was researching novel antimicrobials derived from the marine environment. Working alongside Dr Phil Warburton, Ella focused her project on investigating essential oils for their possible antimicrobial activity against some of the most common bacteria causing hospital-acquired infections. She identified a number of essential oils that showed promising activity against these bacteria, which could be further explored.
Ella remains passionate about understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in human health and disease. She aims to further her academic career by studying a postgraduate degree course, which she believes will equip her with the skills to research and pursue her interests in women’s health conditions. This area is of personal interest to her due to her experience with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and she hopes to one day contribute to developing new treatments for such conditions.
When asked about receiving the award, Ella said: “It is a privilege to be a recipient of the ‘Biomedical Science Final Year Highest Achiever Award’, sponsored by TVG. Throughout the programme, I faced many academic and personal challenges, often lacking confidence in my abilities. However, my passion and dedication for my studies helped me overcome these obstacles. Winning this award is a significant achievement for me, recognizing both my hard work and affirming my abilities.”
